The five-hour flight had given Wainwright sufficient time to formulate his plan. With a car agency and a limousine at his disposal, it seemed ironic that he should find himself en route to the Hertz counter. But he was in a hurry, and tonight he could not call on Donald, his longtime chauffeur—not this time. This was something he had to do covertly.

Inside the rented Buick, Wainwright switched on the light and once again set up his cellular phone. Then he dialed Landes’s car phone.

No answer.

Reaching around to the backseat, he picked up his sports jacket and withdrew the address book from the inside pocket. He thumbed through the pages until he found Landes’s home phone number, and he punched it in.

No answer.

Wainwright wanted to slam the phone down. Instead, he looked up the number for the Landes Agency in Long Beach. The answering service picked up.

“Tell him to call Mitchell Wainwright as soon as possible,” he said, and left his cellular phone number.

He checked his watch. It was now after eight. It was a safe bet that Ashleigh wouldn’t be home for another couple of hours. He dialed her number and left a message that he’d call again tomorrow night. Hopefully, she wouldn’t call and discover that he’d left Atlanta. He didn’t want to talk to her until he got things sorted out.

But where in the hell is Landes? He dialed the detective’s car phone again and listened to the eternal ringing, then started up the car and threw it into gear.

He could be at Belmont Shore in under an hour.
